Melby Beach, Shetland

Getting into the feel of the island by taking Buttercup the Beetle (that's my car) on an exploration of the west coast here on mainland Shetland. I drove to the end of one of the roads and chanced upon Melby, near Sandness, where I found a beautiful beach. Storm Malik had been at large the previous day and the waters were easing back off the land. According to Martin, who lives there with his charming dog Maisie, the sea had made itself quite at home in occupying all parts of the hamlet.

Melby Beach, Shetland is part of my Charcoal Landscapes Collection. It was created when I spent a wintry month on Shetland for an artist residency based in Scalloway. I took the rough-textured handmade paper with me on a last-minute whim and found that it seemed to embody the wintry hues of the hunks of charcoal I was working into the weave. The beauty and rawness of the landscape around Shetland captivated my senses and I fully intend to return there.
